Treatment
Mechanical Approach: (2, 3, 4, 5)
· Positioning devices such as the use of a pillow to support the patient’s arm in bed.
· Utilization of lapboards in sitting for shoulder support.
· The use of slings in upright position is effective to prevent GHS. Shoulder strapping has been shown to be useful in the first period after stroke.
Neuromuscular Approach: (2, 3, 4, 5)
· Functional electrical stimulation (FES) for muscle conditioning, increases muscle force and voluntary control ability
Facilitation of GH functional movement is effective for recovery of motor function.
