- For both humeral fractures and gleno-humeral dislocations that develop neurologic signs, it is important that great care be taken in the rehabilitation process. The standard treatment protocol for all conditions should be followed whether it is surgical repair or conservative treatment. All treatments include maintaining range of motion and strength in the shoulder. If there are neurologic signs, treatment emphasis should include (1, 2, 4):
- Possible neural gliding techniques if nerve tissue is sensitive in shortened ranges.
- Re-learning proper scapulo-humeral movement to prevent unwanted compensations that may impinge on the neural structures surrounding the shoulder.
- If the nerve tissue is severely damaged, limit the range of movement initially so there is no disruption of the neural healing process.
- Closely monitor neurologic signs throughout treatment so that the condition does not worsen.
